Courta Scott, BKin, BA

Like many dance educators, I began dance as a shy 5 year old. In Ontario, I danced nationally and competitively, and I completed exams in Russian ballet through the Society of Classical Ballet - Vaganova Method. As an educator with over 20 years experience, I love this style of ballet pedagogy for its emphasis on the classical style, gorgeous port de bras, and beautiful head placement. You'll notice that I utilize syllabi from several associations, depending on the dance style and the student.

The Journey

A While I was excited to continue to dance post-secondary, I made a last-minute decision to attend Acadia University to earn a Bachelor of Kinesiology (minor in French). The degree required equal parts science, arts, and business and ended up being a perfect fit for the not-for-profit community dance programme I ran for 12 years, that I started with some fellow dancers during my Kin degree. My second degree was in Sociology (minor in Classics), and it only affirmed for me that access to arts and physical activities at an early age positively shapes experiences and relationships for a lifetime. This is why not-for-profit models of dance education are so important in our communities. When I finished my second degree, I continued to earn certifications in all things health & fitness. I earned a position in Acadia’s School Of Music teaching various dance & performance courses. Then, I spent time in Ontario as a rehabilitative movement therapist while caring for my grandparents. I also presented various segments on the TV show Living Healthy. I moved to Halifax and taught at some reputable studios, including Maritime Dance Academy and Halifax Dance (another not-for-profit!) while travelling to and from the Valley to run my program, ADCCommunity, and teach fitness classes of all kinds.

Our Programs

Finally, we arrive at S2SD today. I work full time from home in a corporate position for a Canadian retailer and continue to lead elite movement training in the community. You can find me at local movement studios leading adults, or in Hants Border leading competitive dancers toward growth and evolution in their performance skills. Our competitive program is delivered on a not-for-profit basis and utilizes unique strategies to keep costs reasonable for families so kids can keep dancing, performing, moving, and growing!
